What are long-term repercussions of a DUI conviction?

When facing a DUI conviction, it is easy to focus only on the most immediate repercussions such as potential time in jail.

While this is a major issue in and of itself, it is not the only hurdle a person will face. Not by a long shot. What are some of the longer-term repercussions that can come from a DUI charge?

Problems with housing

BACtrack points out the potential long-term repercussions of a DUI conviction. This includes the impact that a person will have regarding their competitive edge in both housing and work, and other limiting and life-changing aspects they may deal with.

Regarding competitive edge loss, this primarily refers to the housing market. These days, many of the most desirable places to live always have high levels of competition for the housing there. While a landlord cannot legally discriminate against someone solely for their criminal history, they can and often do prefer candidates without a criminal record.

This can thus lead to many people convicted of DUI crimes having to settle for less desirable housing because they simply cannot compete in more saturated markets.

Problems with employment

As far as jobs go, many industries do not hire someone with a DUI on record for safety reasons. This includes government positions and any position that works with children, including teaching. Of course, it also applies to jobs that require a commercial driver’s license or frequent operation of machinery or equipment.

Finally, the stigma of a DUI could easily catch up to a person and they may no longer feel welcome in their own community. For these reasons, it is important to take DUI charges seriously.
